It’s a Trap!

I made it to Titan Hobby Shop, Capitolio branch by 8:30PM. Familiar faces. I played using the same deck I used last Wednesday.

Refraction Trap - Magic the Gathering

It's a trap!

I feel bad for my very crucial misplay… It was game 3 of round 3. But here’s how my games went:

DECK: NAYA TOOLBOX

Round 1: WIN
vs GW Vengevine: 2-0

Game 1: Board advantage was on him having Fauna Shaman and 2 Vengevine while I only have a Fauna Shaman and Cunning Sparkmage. Then he played Mul Daya Channeler. I was down to 8 (12 damage from 3x Vengevine attacks) when I used Fauna’s ability to discard Squadron Hawk for a Sunblast Angel EOT. Yeah, I have lots of mana. I played Sunblast Angel destroying 2 Vengevines. He got no more cards in hand but knowing he’s playing a creature-based deck, I know his great chance of drawing creatures that will trigger Vengevine’s return. I was lucky enough to get a Stoneforge Mystic, played it, fetched Basilisk Collar, equipped to Cunning Sparkmage and pinged his Mul Daya Channeler. He’s still not playing any creature yet. I drew a Bonehoard, played it with 16/16 Germ Token. We both had 8 creatures on our graveyard each, can’t recall all of them coz my mind started to take note of things when I already had 6 lands. HE CONCEDED. Germ for the win!

Game 2:
My sideboards made me win. 🙂

UPNEXT: I’ll post my sideboard plans to solicit helpful comments and advice.

Round 2: WIN
vs Eldrazi Ramp: 2-1

Game 1:
Summoning Trap to Pathrazer of Ulamog on my EOT.
Annihilator 4 and I only had 2 lands left plus Fauna Shaman. I conceded.

Game 2:
Sword of Feast and Famine for the win! It was equipped to Stoneforge Mystic but it was dealing damage anyway, untapping my lands. Bonus, he discarded a Primeval Titan which made me wonder, “What else is on his hand?” Whoa, a Growth Spasm so he fetched a land and got an Eldrazi token in play which can block my equipped creature. I topdecked Cunning Sparkmage, spit 1 damage to the token, and Stoneforge Mystic swing all the way.

Game 3: ULTIMATE TOPDECK
He played first, land drop.
My turn.
Played creatures in order:
My Birds of Paradise, his Overgrown Battlement, my Phyrexian Revoker naming his Overgrown Battlement, his Joraga Treespeaker, my Linvala, Keeper of Silence, his Wall of Tanglecord, my Fauna Shaman and I know I’m giving him a headache. My goal is to stall him, not to let him accelerate into 6 mana. His creatures were all vanilla, Linvala kept attacking each turn. I used Fauna’s ability to discard my Baneslayer Angel for Acidic Slime to destroy his land. He got 4 Forest then, played Growth Spasm on his turn, got a new forest and an Eldrazi token. Whew, threatening. On his turn, he played All Is Dust. Goodbye everyone except Phyrexian Revoker and Wall of Tangle Cord. Ouch. He was down to 4 by that time. I was holding no more threat, just a reserved Journey to Nowhere and Arid Mesa. I drew Copperline Gorge and played it. Done. He played Wurmcoil Engine and I Journey to Nowhere-d it on my turn. It’s supposed to be for Eldrazis but hey, I don’t want him to gain so much life! Next turn, he played Primeval Titan and there came 2 Khalni Gardena with plant tokens. Whew! I topdecked Inferno Titan! Played it, one damage to each of the 2 plant tokens and one for him. Down to 3! He landdropped Mystifying Maze. Hmmm. What would he do? The moment Inferno Titan attacks, it will deal 3 damage to him if I wish to. Mystifying Maze couldn’t prevent it. He passed the turn without casting anything. I drew Acidic Slime and played it destroying Mystifying Maze. Declared attackers, he played summoning trap to look for answers – got Pathrazer of Ulamog. Inferno Titan attacked, with 3 direct damage to my opponent. Good game!

Round 3: Loss
vs Kuldotha Red: 1 – 2

Game 1:
I mulliganed to 5. Goblin Guide killed me. Lol. You know how fast red deck wins? That’s it.

Game 2:
Thanks to my Arc Trail and Manic Vandal. 🙂

Game 3:
My very crucial misplay decided the game. He attacked a Memnite and Spikeshot Elder with activated Contested Warzone making me down to 5.

I was not able to fully utilize [card]Refraction Trap[/card]. I forgot to hard cast it, overwhelmed with its trap cost so I was reserving it and waiting for him to cast a red instant or sorcery. I have 5 lands in play, then Arid Mesa, Refraction Trap and Inferno Titan in hand. I cracked one Arid Mesa in play, activated Raging Ravine praying that he has no bolt, but still, may manland died with Lightning Bolt and I’ve got no extra white mana to cast Refraction Trap. I took 4 damage then he dealt one more damage by using Spikeshot’s ability. Prior to that, I kept staring at Refraction Trap and Inferno Titan on my hand. Should’ve I known that he has a bolt, I could just take the damage, be patient and cast Inferno Titan next turn to deal 1 damage each to his creatures. Or simply hardcast Refraction trap to prevent Spikeshot’s damage and redirect it to Memnite. I could’ve won the game. Lesson learned.

STANDING: 2-1

Got one booster pack with Contested Warzone and Go for the Throat.

PS. You know the most number of damage I took from K-Red deck? 12. Imagine 2 Perilous Myr, 2 Signal Pest and a kicked Bushwacker attacking me. 4+4+2+2+4, With 1 4-powered creats blocked. Whew.

Updated!

Round 1: WIN
vs Boros: 2 – 1

Game 1:
3 Goblin Guides were attacking me, one with Sword of Feast and Famine. GG.
Since all of his lands were Mountains, I thought it was a Goblin beatdown.

Game 2:
+ 2 Korr Firewalker
+ 1 Baneslayer Angel
Misplay: Baneslayer did not attack, he only had Korr Firewalker and Goblin Guide.
Psyched: I know he was not holding a removal when I played Kor Skyfisher. On his turn, he didn’t attack with the guide. So I equipped Sword of Body and Mind to Skyfisher and attacked. And as I played Baneslayer, he conceded.

Game 3:
Long match. Baneslayer again for the win. 😀

Round 2: WIN
vs RUG: 2 – 1

Game 1: He bolted my second-turn Fauna Shaman so I played another Fauna on my third turn.
4th, discarded Vengevine, fetched Vengevine.
5th, landdropped, played Precursor Golem
6th, played Hero of Oxid Ridge and another Fauna Shaman, triggering Vengevine’s ability to return in the battlefield. Swing! He was down to 17 by then and whichever he blocks, he’ll still lose.

Game 2: Revenge of his Precurson Golem
I only had one Arc Trail, not enough to kill those pesky artifacts. I conceded. Mana drought, too. 🙁

Game 3: Long match!
Arc Trailed his Lotus Cobra.
Journeyed his Inferno Titan.
My Squadron Hawk had Sword of Body and Mind, he played Frost Titan, and targeted that Hawk not to untap. I just played more Hawks on my turn plus Vengevine. He played Precursor Golem and I did the same on my turn. Got another sword – Sword of Feast and Famine and my flyers became more evasive. When we were called out for the last 5 turns, he scooped his cards on turn 2. GG.

Round 3: LOSS
vs Vampires: 0 – 2

The usual combo I hate: Bloodghast, Viscera Seer, Kalastria Highborn!

Round 4: WIN
vs my boyfriend’s UB Infect: Scripted 2 – 0

He really loves me. Hehe. 🙂
