While I can simply edit previous post and insert these images, I chose not to. I soooo love these new photos and think they deserve a special spot here in my MTG blog.

Last year it was Lizzie Dee, now it’s Jaya Ballard!
Who am I kidding here? It’s the same MTG Demo Team, only bigger. Plus, Wella dressed up as Chandra and yours truly as Jaya Ballard.
I had the opportunity to play as the frontliner inviting people for the demo, so yes, more photo ops. Lol.
My Day 1 went like this:
Day 1 CosMania: Just like last year, only better…
The Bad: Ako na ang pinaghalohalong Catwoman, Black Widow at taong grasa.
1. Highschool guy fanboys, “OMG! Chandra’s teacher! —– Jaya Ballard ” (Okayyy, not really but way better.)
2. Sophisticated mom: (brows raised while scrutinizing me from head to toe): Kumakain ka pa ba?
Me: Opo. Kakatapos nga lang.
Sophisticated mom: Kakainggit ka. Ang sexy mo. (Palakpak tenga ko)
3. Mom (w/ daughter by her side): Miss pwede ka ba mainterview about cosplay?
Me: Ay hindi po ako talaga nagcocosplay. May event lang ngayon. Try nyo po MTG demo.
Mom: Project nya kasi sa school yung interview.
Me: Wait po. I can guide you sa PR if you have other questions.
Mom: Ah hindi dun na lang. Ang ganda pa naman ng suot mo.

The Best: Oh yisssssssss! YOLO YOLO din pag may time.
Playing MTG with your friends is as fun as teaching the game to others with them. Look at us!
Sunday came and we’re back to business.
I really like seeing competitive players. Of all the demo/matches I’ve setup, my fave were matches between siblings. Younger ones were so energetic while older siblings were obviously skilled. I even get LSSed with the little boy’s winning chant against her sister: “Hit me with your best shot! Hit me with your best shot…”
I’m not sure how many demo decks were given away but I’m pretty sure there’ll be lots of new faces to see in different MTG stores and tournaments!
Once again, big thanks to Wizards of the Coast and the entire MTG Demo Team for another great experience.
The fire mages wish to say Hi!
This is how I transformed! #TROLLOLOL
Xrystina, NicaBun, VicV
The release of Magic Origins led me to changing my deck because I don’t like to be Languish-ed. I’ve tried Abzan Midrange, Abzan Dragons, and Sultai Dragons but I wasn’t satisfied with the result. I’ve got a lot of draws and got bored with long games. I had last minute changes before WMCQ 1 and switched back to Abzan Aggro. Prior to that, I was considering UR Ensoul and RDW. But because I haven’t played these decks before, I decided to go for Abzan Aggro which required very little adjustment from the last time I used it. So I said, “Hello Hangarback Walker, let’s do it!”
My WMCQ 1 record was 5-4-1. Not impressive but 110 points made me happy.
There came PPTQ Madrid after the first WMCQ week. I joined Xtreme Hobby Cafe’s event and finished 16th out of 51 players. 4-2 made it to the prize packs.
0-2 vs UB Control
It just so happened that he got answers to my threat every effin’ time.
0-2 vs Sultai Control
Isn’t it funny when your own Siege Rhino is attacking you? That’s big thanks to his turn 3 Ashiok! Grrr.
Game 2 was a super close fight! He was down to 2 and I was just waiting for Siege Rhino. He had no more cards in hand. I’ve already used 3 Thoughtseize for Languish, Disdainful Strike and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon earlier. But then his Silumgar, the Drifting Death imposed a huge threat. I top decked Elspeth, Sun’s Champion only to be countered by his just drawn Disdainful Strike. Argh. Tick-tick-tick and he won.
2-1 vs RDW
Game 3: I was down to 5 and he was still at 14 life. He had 3 creatures while I’ve got Siege Rhino and Fleecemane Lion in play. I was just hoping for any lifegain effect on my turn because I was definitely going to die any moment. (At this point, Raven turned away. I guessed it was really painful watching me like this. LOL.) And as if Siege Rhino wouldn’t enough, I topdecked Sorin, Solemn Visitor. +1-ed and attacked for 9 damage. I’m back to 14 life while he’s down to 5. I passed the turn and it took him a while before he extend his hand.
Raven thought I lost. And so I told him how lucky I was to draw Sorin.
2-0 vs UW Heroic
Managorger Hydra for the win. It was as if the Hydra didn’t care about opponent’s deck.
Game 1 it was 8/8.
Game 2 it was 4/4 and attacking together with Siege Rhino. I already Thoughtseized his Glare of Heresy. Then I’ve got another Siege Rhino.
2-1 vs Abzan Midrange
This is my favorite match for the entire 6 rounds.
I really love MTG because it’s like problem solving to me. (Math and Physics word problems are my favorite!)
I thought I was going to lose in Game 2 when he already had 2 Siege Rhinos. We’re both down to 5. I had lots of cards in my graveyard including Abzan Charm and Hero’s Downfall while my Siege Rhino and faced down Den Protector were in play. In his end of turn, I braved whatever he might have with 2 mana available. That could be Dromoka’s Command or Bile Blight but I felt that whether he has the answer or not, I will still do the same thing. I megamorphed Den Protector and returned Abzan Charm from graveyard to my hand. On my turn, I used Abzan Charm to put 2 +1/+1 on Den Protector before attacking. He scooped his cards and we proceeded to Game 3.
My best play here was when I used Dromoka’s Command.
Here’s the scenario..
He attacked me with his Tasigur and Hangarback Walker 2/2. I had 2 Fleecemane Lion and Hangarback Walker 2/2 as well.
I blocked Tasigur with my Hangarback Walker and 1 Fleecemane Lion. The other Fleecemane Lion blocked his Hangarback.
Before damage dealing, he cast Bile Blight on the Fleecemane Lion blocking Tasigur. I responded with Dromoka’s Command: +1/+1 to my Hangarback and the blighted Fleecemane to fight Tasigur. It resolved. I took no damage and got 3 Thopter Tokens plus the other Fleecemane Lion while only 2 Thopter tokens was left to him. Unfortunately, time’s up in the round and there was a call for last five turns. He just conceded so I won.
2-0 vs Mardu Midrange
Managorger Hydra was so consistent in both games. But oh well, there were Lightning Strike and Crackling Doom for that.
My timely Thoughtseize picked his Infinite Obliteration in Game 2. My deck did the usual stuff and it went well for me.
My Abzan Aggro is back for good. See you in WMCQ 3 and I’ll just post my decklist after that event. Lol.
I had the time of my life on Facebook the other day. LOL. Thanks to awesome MTG players!
It all started with boredom and migraine… I literally wanted to bang my head against the wall. And no, I couldn’t take any sleeping pills or pain reliever because the doctor said so. I just finished my 2-week medication and my neurologist wanted me to have a followup checkup only that I didn’t have the time yet. Probably next week.
Naming a card that reminds me of them is pretty easy. I know them personally and when I choose the card for someone, it’s either it looks like that person or the card played a special role in our games/lives. I remember some with the last card I bought from them. LOL. Others by their Commanders. And some because of their favorite or most hated card. As long as there’s a card that reminds me of them, I don’t have to give any reason. Afterall, it’s my wall.
Thanks to nested comments, the thread is more organized. I can directly reply to people without tagging their names. It seems that these are the crowd’s favorites judging from the “Likes” (View Full FB Post):
Then I asked them the same question…
Lo and behold! Their comments are quite entertaining (View Full FB Post):
I have so many personalities. LOL. And these:
The next time I’m bored, I’ll just read this post again. And even if I grow older, for sure this post will still make me smile…
Because Thunderbreak Regent was at stake, I expected that Game Day was going to be tough with everybody aiming for a set (including me). LOL. So I tweaked my deck few hours before the tournament with a must-win mindset. As usual, I’ve got no sleep nor a decent meal coming from a graveyard shift. Hehe.
Here’s my new list (boyfriend didn’t approve some of my card choices
especially the broken numbers but I prefer it this way and it has to be my way just because…)
I got my first Thunderbreak Regent from GMaster Games and I planned to get 3 more by attending late afternoon and next day events. Original plan was:
Saturday: (1)GMaster Games and (2)XHC
Sunday: (3)GMaster Games and (4)Spiral Valenzuela
There was nothing remarkable about my matches except that my main Surge of Righteousness did a great job. Just as I thought, it won’t go to waste knowing that local meta is red and Abzan.
2-1 vs BW Warriors
2-0 vs Jeskai Aggro
0-2 vs Monored Aggro
ID vs Monored Aggro
0-2 vs RG Dragons
This was my second time losing to RG Dragons. #Sweep
So if ever I’ll be changing decks, I might consider this one. Or maybe Atarka Red.
Lowering the curve was actually the best approach to deal with hyperaggressive decks. I didn’t feel the need for Wingmate Roc and Tasigur all throughout the games.
Did I manage to get a set of Thunderbreak Regent? NO. A lot of things were waiting at home and we couldn’t afford to stay late outside. Too many household chores, too many stressful things. Then we woke up late on Sunday giving us no chance to make it to the tournament. So much for my original plan. *sigh*
Overall, I was happy with my deck performance and DTK Game Day loots. Hoping to grind more in the next few days! Of course I have to make few more adjustments based on my tournament results, meta, and bf’s suggestions.
This is a summary of the week that was…. work, magic and everything in between.
I’ve found a good read online and I can totally relate to the author – Things My Male Tech Colleagues Have Actually Said to Me, Annotated
We’re the same in a sense that I’ve been working in a male environment since OJT days up to this point
since technology is my expertise. But unlike her, I don’t make sacrifices for Llorothaag.
Much of being trolled to think that it was past April 1. I clicked on hot girl’s thumbnail on Facebook not knowing that it was linked to the many funny faces of Nicolas Cage. #Sucker
I encouraged my friend Ed to join Team Well Played‘s Hoodie & Shirts Giveaway and so he did. Here’s our entry!
My boyfriend’s grandma passed away and it was a very sad news to the family. While she was really old, no one’s prepared for it. There is no such thing as timely death.
I was sick since Thursday and a bit worried about my weekend. It might mean I have to stay at home. #Boring
I was ranting about how unlucky my summons were but a guild member assured me it was fine.
M1: You know the secret to happiness?
M1: Lower expectations. LOL
Well, I’ve been playing Summoners War for 1 and half months and some people think I’m lucky to have these monsters:
Finally got a Dark Death Knight. #B1Forever
… because I’ve got my daily dose of magic on a Black Saturday.
Don’t expect a detailed report. I was kinda sick and too sleepy to remember (coming from my graveyard shift as usual). I used the same deck from last week with slight changes as follows:
– 1 Bile Blight
+ 1 Ultimate Price
(I’ve got no Dromoka’s Command yet for Valorous Stance’s slot.)
-2 Back to Nature
-1 Surge or Righteousness
+2 Master of the Unseen
+1 Ultimate Price
2-0 vs UB Control
2-1 vs Abzan Aggro
0-2 vs RG Dragons
2-0 vs Abzan Midrange
ID with 4-color combo
Quarterfinals: Conceded to my good friend Roy.
Notable cards from my prize packs: Atarka’s Command, Deathmist Raptor.
Cheers to Sunday gaming! It’s nice to see my friends again. LOL. And I went crazy upon seeing the altered Ajani’s Pridemate with four seasons of Hello Kitty!
1-2 vs Monored Aggro
I let my Wingmate Roc died to Roast. I must’ve been very hungry by then thinking about nothing but roasted chicken. How could I let it happen? Actually, we’ve been in a complicated sitch since it involved my boyfriend who was a spectator of the match. I took all the responsibility of that illegal play and still won Game 2. GG on Game 3. I didn’t stand a chance with Eidolon of the Great Revel after missing my 3rd land drop. It was too late for Drown in Sorrow.
1-1 vs BW Warriors
I wasn’t able to shake off the feeling of being too stupid…. so let’s welcome another mistake. Since my Fleecemane Lion has been swinging freely for 2 consecutive turns, I assumed he didn’t have any Bile Blight. Prolly not yet. And I overcommitted with my second Fleecemane Lion. Both met a blighted ending on his turn.
1-2 vs UB Control
This is the worst misplay I’ve ever done. Most stupid that I couldn’t forgive myself. Using Elspeth, Sun’s Champion’s second ability to destroy Silumgar, the Drifting Death while I had a 4/4Elemental creature from Nissa, Worldwaker? WTF ran through my head?! Maybe, all of my brain cells died with so much frustrations earlier. My sanity has forsaken me. And I decided I’m going to drop.
For the first time, I didn’t walk the talk. Last week, this was my comment on xalmendarez’ blog post:
As much as I wanted to continue playing, I was too certain that I won’t do any better. I promised myself to make it up with lots of playtest the following week. I was too scared to look into my boyfriend’s eyes because I knew, he was going to say a lot of nasty things. I talked to my friend instead, “Pong, what’s the plan?” He got 2 losses already and wanted to drop as well. I told him I wasn’t ready to listen to a nagging boyfriend for I might break down any moment…
I was thankful Raven has been considerate and didn’t say a thing. Whew. We just sat down and started opening packs. I bought something for my deck (Please disregard foil Lose Calm and the other side of Morph token):
We headed to SM Megamall from XHC for our usual Sunday late magic with cosplayer friends. There I got my much needed summer lovin’ and care from my girl friends. I also got a choco mango crepe from them after dinner! #SweetTreat
Our craziness kicked in! Meet Wasabi guy.
I made his balls and cover them with parsley because it was Easter Sunday and I wanted them to join the “egg hunt”. Tinn almost died laughing. LOL
We parted ways at around 10PM. Raven and I had our second dinner at local tapsihan and we found a stray kitten on our way home. He brought it with us and I named it Django.
Thank you for reading.
As suggested by Pong, I’ll be changing my pink sleeves with RTFC soon. Read the F-ing cards because reading is tech!
There’s supposed to be no Sunday Gaming for me because I was too tired from last night. But then I woke up at 11 AM feeling refreshed and invigorated. I went online and found a sweet event:
Unfortunately, I didn’t make it in time so I ended up joining a Standard pod using my Abzan Aggro deck.
0-2 vs Temur Midrange
Those DTK dragons killed me! I had a hard time dealing with Thunderbreak Regent and Icefall Regent. And there was always a Stubborn Denial to ruin my plans.
2-0 vs UW Heroic
That moment when you have Siege Rhino, Wingmate Roc and 3/4 Bird token then Sorin visited and gave them +1/+0 and lifelink to turn the table… Winner!
Game 2 was a bonus since he was stuck with one land for a while and it was too late to draw his second land.
2-0 vs UB Control
I hate blue cards. Playing against control means I have to deal with a lot of counters and removal. Whew. So happy to win the first game!
In game 2, I had an early Fleecemane Lion and it remained untouched. I was expecting a Bile Blight or Hero’s Downfall but there came Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver after his third land drop. He +2 it exiling 1 Rakshasa Deathdealer and 2 lands. It took me long to decide about my first attack. I decided to attack Ashiok with Fleecemane and gave it two +1/+1 to kill the planeswalker. He cast Perilous Vault on his turn. I attacked for 5 damage. He passed the turn and missed a land drop. I played Thoughtseize and his nonlands were Thoughtseize, Dissolve, Perilous Vault, and Ashiok Nightweaver. I chose to discard his Thoughtseize because it was the worst card he could use against me while I’ve got Siege Rhino, Wingmate Roc and Sorin, Solemn Visitor. He got his fifth land and passed the turn. I attacked with my Fleecemane Lion. He took 5 damage. And another 5 damage on my next turn. I wanted to flush his Dissolve and/or activate Perilous Vault real bad. I cast Sorin but he didn’t counter it. But after putting a 2/2 Vampire token, he activated Perilous Vault EOT. When he was down to 9 because of Polluted Delta, I already had 2 Siege Rhinos handy. I just drew Anafenza and cast it only to be countered. Just as planned. He then played his Ashiok and +2 getting 2 Rakshasa Deathdealer and 1 Duress from me. I played the first Rhino making him down to 6. There came his Tasigur and Perilous Vault next. I was hoping for a sweet topdeck and got a third Rhino. The second resolved and he was down to 3. On his turn, he attacked with Tasigur. I blocked just for the lels. He used Ashiok’s second ability for Rakshasa and while it’s on the stack, activated Perilous Vault. Everything was exiled except for Rakshasa. The moment he tapped out, Siege Rhino wanted to charge right away. *poker face* And so the third Rhino zeroed his life.
Thus, the revenge of the Rhinos.
This is a story of how Van Mamokhan emerged as the GPT Shanghai Champion at GMaster Games. His monored deck trampled the Abzan Houses except for one to whom I had a draw with. The end.
Ok, on to my deck list:
Credit goes to Conrad Dungan for the mainboard and bf for the sideboard. Thanks guys!
It was my first time using this deck so going undefeated before the playoffs is a feat.
Atleast for me.
2-0 vs RG Devotion
Just when he had big creatures like Polukranos and Genesis Hydra, I always had the right removal to deal with them. No game highlights.
2-0 vs Abzan Midrange
My oppononent got a game loss penalty for registering incorrect number of cards or whatever the technical term for it. We proceeded to Game 2 and I won.
2-1 vs Monored Aggro
Opponent won Game 1 even at one-land play.
+3 Drown in Sorrow
+3 Surge of Righteousness
-2 Valorous Stance
-2 Abzan Charm
-2 Hero’s Downfall
I won the remaining 2 games and I was proud of myself for delaying his Obelisk of Urd by all means. Well, a Downfall for 1/1 creature was kinda pathetic but I just felt the need to kill them. True enough, when he had 4 lands and 2 remaining Goblins, Urd came. On his next turn, he used Harness by Force to contol my Anafenza, the Foremost so I got no blockers. I destroyed one of his Goblins with Surge of Righteousness and gained 2 life. Once I’ve got my Anafenza back, I attacked him and “raid” for Wingmate Roc. GG.
1-1 vs Abzan Midrange
His early Thoughtseize left me behind the game. I lost.
Game 2 was a bit exciting. Last 5 turns and he was down to 1, while I was down to 2. So whoever topdecks Rhino wins the game.
He cast End Hostilities to destroy my Rakshasha Deathdealer and Anafenza. I was forced to regenerate Rakshasa and took 1 damage from Llanowar Wastes.
I played another Rakshasa on my turn and he responded with Abzan Charm. Unfortunately, it was an illegal target.
He passed the turn. I attacked for the win.
2-0 vs Monored Aggro
1-2 vs Monored Aggro
I was pretty used to red decks but then it was Van-Van, Laro 2014 Champion. We had numerous matches from before and I’m not even sure if we have a score to settle. Lol.
I won the first game and almost won the second if not for back to back Roast for my Rhinos. Insane topdeck.
Third game was so intense too. He burned every creature I played. He even killed my Sorin twice. A Roast for Tasigur. And Stormbreath Dragon started popping up one after another. He was down to 13 and I was trying to figure out how to kill him with my Siege Rhino, Wingmate Roc and 3/4 Bird Token. I wished I had 2 Abzan Charm so I could swing for the win. But no, I only had one which could only deal a maximum of 12 damage. When he cast his third Stormbreath Dragon, I was doomed. He then showed me the 4th one from his hand. WTF. GG.
A piece of advice from Van – I could have done better by abusing Delve and filtering my graveyard with Tasigur. Yes, I know. There were 2 Hero’s Downfall that I could use but I was so obsessed with Sorins that I didn’t want to delve them away. Of course I’ve considered all the possibilities but sometimes I was too greedy. Lesson learned. But wait, there was only 1 Stormbreath Dragon by that time so I wasn’t eyeing Downfall at all.
X-1-1 without a decent sleep and proper meal wasn’t bad at all not to mention that it was my first time piloting this new deck. More practice!
DTK PR straight from my (graveyard) shift!
Dragons of Tarkir without a single dragon in my pool. ATARKA, wherever you are, lend me your power!
My first choice was Dromoka just because it’s Dromoka. But after skimming through CFB’s DTK PR Primer I wanted to go Kolaghan. TLDR. I didn’t want to be of the same brood as Raven so I finally picked Atarka hoping it goes with a pink/purple dice. (But it didn’t so I ended up trading my orange dice to a cuter purple one.)
2-1 vs Atarka
He was pretty confident with his morphed 5/5 creature. But I was lucky enough to draw Roast. Now his calculation was all messed up and he had to concede when I dealt my first 9 damage to him with Atarka Efreet and my 2/1 creature.
Game 2: Hi killed me with an overwhelming number of flying creatures. 1 Revealing Wind wasn’t enough.
Game 3 is a giveaway. He was stuck with 3 lands while I had a great tempo.
2-0 vs Atarka
Atarka’s Command for the Win!
We’re on a stalemate for long since we’re both Atarka having lots of creatures on board. And then I accidentally dropped/revealed my Revealing Wind which changed his gameplay. I was hoping he’d go all in so that I could strike back in one swing. Not happening.
At long last he had more and bigger creatures than me so he decided to attack leaving just one blocker. I was “forced” to play Revealing Wind (since that is the obvious thing to do). My turn came and this was my chance to swing. I attacked with everything, he blocked with one creature then I played Atarka’s Command for the win. +1/+1 to all creatures and 3 damage to opponent. Lethal.
In game 2, he was ahead of the game. He was pressuring me and I was down to 8. I only had Dragon-Scarred Bear in play. But then I was able to setup with 2 morphed Atarka Efreet. I only attacked them by the time I had 6 mana. No blockers. Megamorphed both and he took 14 damage in one swing.
He passed the turn so I assumed he’s just going to block my next attack. I attacked with my 3 creatures, all of them we’re blocked and meant to die even with Atarka’s +1/+1. I just did it for 3 damage hoping that I’ll get another burn spell later on. I had no other choice but to pressure him and push the damage or else I’d die. Top deck: Den Protector. 5 lands in play and my two cards in hand were a Forest and a Plains. Played Forest. Cast Den Protector, as a morph creature. Megamorphed targetting Atarkas’s Command. Same mode as earlier. GG.
1-2 vs Kolaghan
There’s nothing special about our game 1 and game 2. The decks just worked right. Game 3 was a little tight since it is the deciding game. I mulled to 6 while he kept his opening hand. He aggresively attacked me with his Dash creatures until he was able to cast Boltwing Marauder. I Pacisfism-ed it on my turn. Only to be exploited for Rakshasa Gravecaller on his next turn. While he got 2 extra Zombies, I only had Qal Sisma Behemoth and another creature. I was in the red zone in no time so I had to block his all-in attack. As expected, he got Volcanic Rush. Then it took him longer to decide on his action. Finally, he cast Butcher’s Glee for his Zombie killing my Qal Sisma Behemoth and gaining 7 life. It messed up my calculation since I’ve got Atarka’s Command in my hand. Then I was down to 6 with only 2 creatures. I couldn’t force the damage yet since he had blockers. I decided I will wait for one more turn. Only if I could. He attacked again with 2 creatures. I considered all the possibilities and I was sure that if I block 1 or both, I won’t have a chance to win in my next turn since my creatures will get killed. Also, blocking with only 1 creature is the same as not blocking at all IF he has a burn or pump spell since I will die anyway. I gambled with no blockers and lose. It was a nice game indeed.
2-0 vs Kolaghan
Fastest match of the day. I had great opening hand and draws on both games.
Best cards here were: Qal Sisma Behemoth, Atarka Efreet, Sarkhan’s Rage, and of course Atarka’s Command.
MVPs: Atarka Efreet and Atarka’s Command
Most used SB: Surge of Righteousness
I finished X-1 but still no impressive cards. Finally got dragons from the prize packs namely Pristine Skywise and Dragonlord Dromoka. I also got Stratus Dancer. It was a fun PR especially that I’ve got to play with my friends and immediate MTG family. LOL. I’m so proud of our MTG-born son, Aki. Congratulations my dear! Number 1!
And here’s to FAMAS award without the red carpet. Semi-paparazzi! Thank you GMasters! (Nice place and people + free food and drinks.)
The family that plays together, ends up in the top 3 together. – ST Estrella
2 days were soooo rewarding. OMG OMG OMG! Lol. Will update this post soon.
Check my post here: Sharing the Spark – Lizzie Mentors at Cosmania 2014
When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a teacher. Not because I knew that it was a noble profession, but simply because I was inspired by my educators. Right now, I am not sure if I still want to be one. I’m quite happy spending hours in front of a work laptop during weekdays and shuffling cards during weekends. But there’s one event I’m thankful about which reminded me that teaching comes in many forms – Cosmania 2014. As part of the MTG Demo Team, I had the chance to introduce Magic to new players. It was a great experience – heart-warming, fulfilling and rewarding. But then again this was months ago – sorry for the late blog entry. A lot of things happened between then and now and I couldn’t write when I’m obsessed and cramped. That feeling is finally over, thank goodness. So let me get started by sharing some observations.
